I served as a dentist in the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division for two years. My tour of duty in Vietnam was in a small jungle village 40 miles north of Saigon from September '65 to August of '66. Our medical company served like a MASH unit. While our primary focus was to our troops, we did open our hospital and dental facilities to the local Vietnamese people. It did not take long to see the great need and great appreciation the Vietnamese people had for treatment.

The memory of some of their hardships under such poor conditions will never be forgotten. In March of 2005 my wife and I went to Vietnam to see first hand some of the schools, hospitals, and other aid we have been able to provide to the Vietnamese people through the D.O.V.E. Fund. Bottom line, the need is still great and their appreciation is exceptionally heart warming.
