Fred Grimm, D.O.V.E. Fund Founding Member
Fred Grimm, a Founding Member of the D.O.V.E. Fund, shares some
thoughts from his many trips to Vietnam over the past 20 years.
Fred Grimm shares his thoughts on the things he likes in Vietnam
In 1968, I was drafted and then sent to Vietnam April 1969 and served as a combat
engineer in Quang Ngai Province. My job was to mine sweep the highway every
morning and then spent most of the days building Highway 1 to the north.
On August 12, 1969, I was wounded when our LZ Dottie was attacked at
2:00 in the morning. I was sent to a field hospital in Pleiku and
shortly thereafter was sent to a hospital in Tokyo, Japan. I fully
expected that once I healed I would be released from the hospital
and sent back to Vietnam. Instead, I got orders to go back to
"The World", back to the United States.
In 2001, I returned to Vietnam as a trustee of the D.O.V.E. Fund.
I remember our approach to Tan San Nhut Airfield and wondering what
the heck I was doing. I made it out alive once and why am I doing this.
Needless to say, that D.O.V.E. Fund trip was a very rewarding
experience for me, and I have made 19 more trips since then, to help the
poorest kids in Vietnam.
For me, going back with the D.O.V.E. Fund was the best way for me to revisit
a country that I had thought about thousands of times. I have never regretted
making the decision to go back.
